Friends of Oihonna

Friends of Oihonna

Being the perfect boat taking a small group on long voyages Oihonna is now crewed by a 50-something group of people loosely related as Friends of Oihonna. (FoO). They keep s/v Oihonna afloat, safely equipped, and foremost: sail with her.

Oihonnas future is what we make of it.

Whats next?

Summer 2024

Cruising season Winter 2024 into 2025 is looking good. Three young men and of course FoO-members: Malte, Leo and Ture have asked for disposition of  Oihonna for a trip westward.

We have strongly lauded this endeavor and have agreed that they will take command w
herever the rest of us at FoO manage to take her.

Be it Kiel, Tershelling, Guernsey, Brest or Ile d Oleron.

From there, and from 1:st September, they are in command and rule who is on board and where to go. Possibly West Indies, and in that case there is a
chance we can all celebrate bourgeoisie Christmas in Bay of Pigs, on Cuba.

There is an idea that we can get a reduced docking fee in Playa Larga if we have a banner on Oihonnas side stating: “En conmemoración del 67 aniversario de la exitosa lucha contra el imperialismo”

We see three phases:

#1 Sailing south during early summer from Storholmen whenever there is crew and the feeling is right.
Ending up wherever and leaving Oihonna at anchor for a week or two when one has to be at work has to be done.

We know we have dock-space and friends in:

  • Oxelösund/ Niklas who sells us the new engines
  • Solstadsström-Småland/Jakob and Lena
  • Grankullavik-Öland/Maria and Karl Andersson
  • Rönne- Bornholm/my retired blacksmith-friends from last summer
  • Eckenförde- N Germany/Jeppe and Elivria welcomes us and we might find space side by side with Tryggvason.
  • Tershelling- Friesian islands/Sea rescue station manned by a friend of mine and Micke Hinnerson.
  • La Cotinière – Ile d’Oléron/Lovisa and Gael have a house there and have been befriending the harbour master.

# 2 In August its all aboard
Continuous sailing until we meet up with Malte, Leo and Ture wherever that might be on first of September.
This phase will be as usual, you contribute $50/night for the upkeep of Oihonna, and everybody share the running costs when on board.
As usual, a day working on the upkeep means less need for budget support.

 Who i
s onboard during what week in August remains to be seen, but Jon and Josefin has already said they wanna come first week of August.
Magnus is feverishly flipping through his packed calendar and Rachel are already booking flights.

All interested parties are welcomw to state that on Friends of Oihonna and possibly we will offer some kind of “calendar” so the “first come first ser
ve” can book a bunk and then show up wherever Oihonna is that day.

  • Frisian genever in Tershelling anyone?
  • A mighty spliff in Amsterdam?
  • A bottle of red in Dunquerque?
  •  An offshore account in Guernsey?
  •  Some cheese in Brest or a fin de claire in Il de Oleron?

# 3  Go West young men! (and women)
And us, who are not that young, can take a plane and catch up with Oihonna where ever she ends up. And then possibly throw all sesnse over board and go up the US East coast and watch some whales in Bay of Fundy, du the St Lawrence canal up to Huron, Eire and the other sweet water ponds. Possibly listen som banjo music in remote Lake Superiour and then leave Oihonna with Rachel and Milwakuee for over wintering before heading home in 2026.

Its all possible.

 Winter 2023/24

It has been a looong winter, but finally the light has come to shine on the dust in the corners

Oihonna is in good mood. All systems go.
Tomorrow we (Bo Öhlen and  Josefin Hagdahl) are going to Oxelösund to pick up one fully working copy of Oihonnas main engine (NissanChrysler SD33 104 HP) and store it in Josefins basement for a rainy day. One of Oihonnas achilles heels just go a band aid!

There are two machines to be gotten in Oxelösund, but the other one we will cannibalize for  water- and high-pressure fuel pumps, thermostat, starter, alternator etc.
All that comes loose will be cleaned and oiled and stored under the floorboards for that rainy day in Kap Verde where you dont want to air-freight the whole extra engine just to get the fuelpump working.

Sails were renovated last year by Magnus Möllerstedt, Josefin Hagdahl, Bo Öhleen, Olof Stenlund and myself and worked flawlessly during the summer. Gabriela Markovic and Karin Strid put the finishing touches on the new Sprayhood and renovated the sunroof. So now thats all in working order.

All in all, she’s pulling at her moorings and just need an able and willing crew for new adventures!

May 2023
The Norwegian coast? Kitesurfing in Poland? Get a new coat of paint in a Lithuanian shipyard?  Visit Solovetsky in the White sea and carry on to the Black sea via St Petersburg and Moscow? Do the dhow-route from Oman to Mozambique?

Winter in Ilé de Oleron and do Canal du Midi to Golfe de Lion?

(The last option is currently excluded from the itinerary until the French government accepts our demand to dredge the canal from its current two meters to an honourable depth where real boats like Oihonna (draft 2,2 m) can navigate)

As long as she gets painted, have the  oil changed and sailes fixed on Olofs sewing machine that’s all possible.

Paint and upkeep is about $5000 annualy. That we cover by Nora paying to live aboard, and each of us contributing $50/a night when sailing on board.

But Oihonna is a black hole and all contributions are welcome. She has her own bank account (SEB SEB 5372 02 373 46) and a Patreon account.

Oihonnas status is good. She has many more miles to go with some upkeep.

She will need a new main sooner or later. Costs $ 10 000. And a genoa… cost $ 15 000. The engine should have 5 000 more hours to go, but then it´s $ 20 000 for a new one.

In the meantime Nora&Wille have gotten new glowplugs and the engine starts on the first turn, Björn has carved out a fresh oak-railing to the port side, Bibban is working on a new sprayhood and Mats has donated teak-planking that hew saved when he laid the deck 20 years ago.

She needs to have the rail sanded, and Kjell has reported for duty (unclear WHEN though, but thats Kjell… 🙂 ). Wille has tried to loosen the fuel injectors to bring them to a 10-year service, but the wrenches on board were to small. But now they just left the ship for maintenance at Mattias workshop.
The sails are longin for Olofs sail-sewing machine that will refurbish the genoa and the main with new seems in a few weeks. (The old seams are eaten up by uv-light so the sails panels come apart and hand sewing is nice, but not that many miles…)

This will all happen, sooner or later. All is well onboard!

FoO – the story

Oihonna was built of 22 tonnes of steel by the light keeper at Lurö in Lake Vänern. It then took many years of hard work by Mats and Birgitta who then subsequently took early retirement and sailed her safely 40 000 miles across the Med and over to the West-Indies and back. They have just finalized a book with the full story that we hope to be able to present here.

2021

In 2021 FoO set out for a trip around the Baltic. Jens and Fred took her from Gothenburg to Malmö with a stop at Tycho Braes magic island of Hven. Malin and Julian crewed in 17 meters per secound winds under the Öresund bridge, and Josefin and Magnus took over in the Falsterbo canal. Jon and the Paprika girls joined on the eel-coast and we paid our honours to Nelson and the Royal navy cemetary on Hanö.

Charlotta with friends joined in Karlskrona for an unforgettable journey in the tracks of U 137 to Utklippan and subsequent multiple breakdowns during a gale in Kalmarsund. Water was pouring in, batteries rock-bottom and VHF and engine start questionable. After negotiating a stand-by with the Sea Rescue by a lifeboat not named for a known economic criminal we safely started the engine and docked in Kalmar behind an Estoinan mafiosi in a powerboat with enviable underwater LED lightning. (Oihonna now has a similar kit that awaits mounting at the next dry-dock opportunity)
Karl, Dagny and Åke gave a helping hand in Kalmar and Oihonna was soon under way again.

After doing Kalmarsund and the Västervik archipelago Oihonna crossed the Baltic to Stora Karlsö, replenished stores at Systembolaget in Visy. Malte then went kite-surfing at island Fårö. Fred went wreck-scavening at Gotska sandön, Jens and Soledad offered opera in Mariehamn and Josefin and Jon hosted 30 something people on board for a major party at Jungfruskär N of Stockholm. Christina, Waldemar and Alex crewed under Pelles command all the way to Motala and then with Niclas on to Sjövik through the legendary Göta kanal.
Ulle & Jens brought her safely down the Göta älv through the mighty locks at Trollhättan and finsihed off with a timely gear box break down just when docking at the home-pier in Stenungsund.
Oihonna is a happy ship!

2022

After a winter of costly and adventurous gear- and cockpit renovation FoO:s Jeppe, Elivira, Hasko and Anna took Oihonna under the safe command of Jens to Norway and across the North Sea to Inverness and the Caledonian canal to Oban and a major feast of fresh seafood in the harbour.

In search of Robert Louis Stevensons legendary inn and public house “The Admiral Benbow ” Oihonna set course for the Hebrides. From Oban we had  a Swedish week with port calls in Arran, Iona, Fingals cave, Tobermoroy with FoO members Kjell, Waldemar, Pelle, Christina and Ingrid. (Pictures here!)

Stig and Charlotta, took her over the Minch where Rachel joined in the outher Hebrides. In Barra we found a sassenach inn keeper and welcomed Mrs Bond who came and went with her aircraft landing on the beach. Eriskay offered 250 000 bottles of Whiskey in the hull of s/s Politician. With Monty and Gabe we managed to retrieve the Fairy flag from McLeaods at Dunvegan and then escaped on a windy night around the northern tip of Skye where we put our anchor securely around a un-used power cable in the fall-winds from SKyews highest mountain. (Documentation here, dont miss the epic version of My Bonnie is over the ocean in front of the McLeods Castle.)

During the French week (Pictures here!Gaël offered a feu de artifice while Tove, Moa, Salomé and Jeanne
securely navigated Oihonnas 22 m high mast under the very low, but according to french measurments, high enough Drochaid an Eilein Sgitheanaich – the road bridge between Skye and what the Scots call the mainland.

Lovisa made healthy food that supported us during the magic flume-ride that followed through the narrow Kyle Rhea, a strait between Skye and the mainland. 15 meters per second average wind fought against our 110 Nissan-Crysler-horses that glowing in the engine room kept Oihonna dead in the water. But with six knots of current with us Oihonna still made headway and safely naviagated the perilous passage.

Nora and Josefin took her through the many locks of the Caledonian canal and Loch Ness to Inverness where Jens, Olof and James joined (Pictures here!) for an uneventful but beautiful North Sea crossing to Lindesnes.

Pelle and Susanne crewed through the narrow straits of Sörlandet, (Pictures here!) picked some stones at Jomfruland and then watched as the Sailomat steered on a straight course for 60 NM straight over Skagerrak to Fiskebäckskil.

Wille and Nora took her to her winterport at Klippans Bruksbåtsförening in the port of Gothenburg.

All in all, adventures that prove Oihonnas commitment to being part of the global village.
